AELXIM® (Cefixime & Combinations)
AELXIM® is a broad-spectrum antibiotic formulation featuring Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin. It is available in multiple combinations with other potent agents like Clavulanic Acid, Lactic Acid Bacillus, Ofloxacin, Ornidazole, Azithromycin, Sulbactam, Dicloxacillin, and Moxifloxacin. These combinations are designed to enhance antibacterial efficacy and provide targeted treatment for a wide range of bacterial infections.
Cefixime – A Powerful Cephalosporin Antibiotic
Cefixime is a semi-synthetic, third-generation cephalosporin with excellent activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the elimination of infection-causing pathogens.
Cefixime Combinations & Their Benefits:
- Cefixime + Clavulanic Acid
- Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which protects Cefixime from degradation by resistant bacteria, increasing its effectiveness against beta-lactamase-producing organisms.
- Indications: Respiratory tract infections, otitis media, and urinary tract infections.
- Cefixime + Lactic Acid Bacillus
- Helps restore gut flora that may be disrupted due to prolonged antibiotic use.
- Indications: Gastrointestinal infections, diarrhea associated with antibiotic therapy.
- Cefixime + Ofloxacin
- Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that enhances bacterial eradication by targeting DNA replication in bacteria.
- Indications: Urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, typhoid fever.
- Cefixime + Ornidazole
- Ornidazole is an antiprotozoal and anaerobic antibacterial agent, making this combination effective against mixed bacterial and protozoal infections.
- Indications: Gastrointestinal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial vaginosis.
- Cefixime + Azithromycin
- Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that broadens the spectrum of activity, particularly against atypical respiratory pathogens.
- Indications: Community-acquired pneumonia, typhoid fever, severe upper respiratory infections.
- Cefixime + Sulbactam
- Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor, like Clavulanic Acid, which helps prevent bacterial resistance.
- Indications: Severe respiratory infections, complicated urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections.
- Cefixime + Dicloxacillin
- Dicloxacillin is a penicillinase-resistant penicillin effective against staphylococcal infections.
- Indications: Skin and soft tissue infections, bone infections, joint infections.
- Cefixime + Moxifloxacin
- Moxifloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone with enhanced activity against respiratory and multi-drug resistant bacteria.
- Indications: Severe respiratory tract infections, tuberculosis adjunct therapy.
Indications
AELXIM® and its combinations are prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, pharyngitis, sinusitis)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs, cystitis, pyelonephritis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections (cellulitis, abscesses)
- Gastrointestinal infections (bacterial diarrhea, enteric fever, Helicobacter pylori infections)
- Sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea)
- Gynecological infections (pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial vaginosis)
- Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis)
Dosage & Administration
Dosage varies based on patient age, severity of infection, and the specific combination used. Physicians must individualize dosing based on clinical conditions.
General Dosage Guidelines:
- Adults & Adolescents (≥12 years):
- Cefixime 200-400 mg/day, in single or divided doses.
- Children (6 months – 12 years):
- 8 mg/kg body weight per day, in divided doses.
- For Severe Infections:
- Combination therapy with Clavulanic Acid, Ofloxacin, or Moxifloxacin may be required.
Administration:
- Can be taken with or without food, but taking it with meals improves absorption and reduces gastrointestinal side effects.
- Suspension formulations should be shaken well before use.
Precautions & Warnings
- Hypersensitivity: Avoid in patients with a history of allergic reactions to cephalosporins or penicillin’s.
- Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustments may be needed in patients with kidney dysfunction.
- Superinfection Risk: Prolonged use may lead to the overgrowth of resistant bacteria or fungi.
- Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD): Persistent diarrhea should be evaluated for C. difficile infection.
- Drug Interactions:
- Avoid combining with probenecid (reduces renal clearance).
- Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin (monitor INR levels).
- Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Safe in pregnancy under medical supervision.
- Use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
Advisory & Patient Guidance
Complete the Full Course: To prevent antibiotic resistance, patients must complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve.
Report Side Effects: Common side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, or rash should be reported if persistent.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help prevent kidney-related side effects.
Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol may reduce antibiotic efficacy and increase side effects.
Consult a Doctor if Symptoms Worsen: If no improvement is seen within 48-72 hours, a physician should be consulted for treatment reassessment.
AELXIM® is a highly effective antibiotic range designed to tackle mild to severe bacterial infections with optimized combinations for different conditions. Whether used as monotherapy (Cefixime alone) or in combination, it provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage, enhanced efficacy, and improved patient outcomes.
